Radio is the most effective communication mode to reach the rural communities because it is the most popular mode among them. Literacy is not a pre -requisite to connect with the radio. Today almost all the households in Sri Lanka have a radio set. Similarly still Radio is the mass media that has the widest coverage in the world. Also it is the lowest cost mode of communication today.
.Studies conducted by SCR have revealed that radio programs can be used to improve the living standards of communities since this powerful media can provide all the information that communities need in making their lives better.
After Gemidiriya was elevated to a national level development program covering 1036 villages in seven districts. There is a vast amount of accumulated knowledge and experience to be shared within the Gemidiriya communities’ spread in seven districts. SCR was envisaged in this backdrop.Today the Gemidiriya scope has been further expanded as the project has been combined with the largest rural development program of the government, Gamanaguma and emphasize the need of community driven media. The SCR was initiated as a pilot project in Polonnaruwa District. This pilot project is destined to implement in two phases.

1 Phase

As the first step, the community of Gemidiriya villages mobilized on the aspects of community radio and core - radio team selected from the community of 27 Gemidiriya   villages will be trained. In this initiative project it is designed to establish a small studio in the community hall of the Sri Nissanka mallapura people's company and start test transmission utilizing simple audio -visual equipment. There after Gemidiriya community in Polonnaruwa district will apply for media license and frequency.

11 Phase

After obtaining media license and frequency establishing broadcasting studios will be commenced.
